The British Literary & Artistic Copyright Association, BLACA,
is the UK national group of the International Literary and Artistic Association (ALAI)
founded in Paris in 1878 under the Presidency of Victor Hugo.
It provides a forum for discussion of matters affecting the rights of authors and other copyright owners.

BLACA is the UK national group of the international 'Association Littéraire et Artistique Internationale' (ALAI), founded in 1878. ALAI's first Hon President was Victor Hugo, who is best remembered for his literary and political work. However, at the Royal Academy in London there is a well-reviewed exhibition of his drawings, entitled 'Astonishing things'. It runs until 29 June. General admission is £17 (free to RA members). Thereare late openings on Fridays.
BLACA committee members are planning to visit on Friday, 30 May, for the RA's Friday Late opening. The Sir Hugh Casson (members') room to the right of the entrance hall is open to the public after 4pm and serves tea, snacks and drinks. We shall meet there from 5.30 before going into the exhibition and return for a drink after viewing the exhibition. Those who are minded can adjourn to the Golden Lion public house in nearby King Street, where the kitchen should be open until 9pm.
5.30-6pm: BLACA committee members will be in RA Members Room
6pm: Visit exhibition
After viewing, return to the members’ room for a drink before walking to Golden Lion pub.Do please join us and bring a guest.

On 17 February 2024, ALAI adopted a Resolution concerning the impact of AI on copyright, accessible here.
Membership
The annual subscription is £50. This covers attendance at all the regular meetings and entitles members to a substantial discount on the fee for joint BLACA seminars. BLACA members are automatically members of ALAI with entitlement to discounted fees to attend its international Congresses and Study Days each year and to receive free copies of the proceedings (A special registration fee is available for registered students).
