The BLACA Prize Competition

Now well established, the BLACA Prize is awarded annually for an essay or presentation concerning any aspect of UK Law of Copyright and Related Rights. In 2010 we had a couple of very stimulating presentations at the Associationís July meeting and this year again we call for proposals for presentations. This year prize winner(s) will be invited to present their paper during a BLACA seminar in London, probably on 14th July 2011.

The following points are the main points concerning the competition, as relating to the year 2011:

1. Eligibility: persons who, in the period 1 September 2010 to 30 September 2011, are or were (undergraduate or postgraduate) students registered in any UK University/Law School, or legal practitioner training course (e.g. to become barrister, solicitor, advocate and including trainee solicitors and barristers in pupilage), of any nationality, resident in any country. Legal practitioners who have qualified or who qualify as such in the period 1 September 2010 to 30 September 2011 are also eligible.

2. Subject matter: a proposal for a previously unpublished presentation on any aspect of UK (and/or European Union) law of copyright and related rights. English language only.

3. Length: an outline of the presentation of no more than 600 words, plus, if included, reference footnotes.

4. Submissions: Outlines should be submitted electronically to the Secretary, BLACA, as an attachment to an e-mail sent to Emma.Rumens@blplaw.com and clearly marked ĎBLACA Prize Competitioní in the subject matter bar before 09.00 am on Monday 2 May 2011. The name of the entrant must not appear on the outline and applicants should also attach a CV which contains proof of their eligibility, as well as their name and address.

5. The Prize: The winner(s) will be given the opportunity to present at a BLACA seminar in London; presenters are asked to be available to present on 14th July 2011 but the date will be confirmed when the prize is offered. BLACA will reimburse travel expenses up to an amount of £100. It is anticipated that the result of the competition will be announced by 31st May 2011.

6. The judging of the competition will be by judges chosen by the BLACA  Executive Committee. The decision of the Executive Committee as to the awarding of prizes (and as to whether any prize is to be awarded) on the recommendation of the judges is final.
